An online shopping guide for the conscious consumer

It’s hard being a consumer these days – boo hoo!  If you’re anything like me, you’re torn between the deluge of cheap, easily available stuff out there and secretly knowing that the reason that tshirt is €10 is that someone has paid for it in sweat, and not in the Kids from Fame way.

Even if you spend a bit more, you’re often never sure what you’re buying.  Whether you’re concerned about employment conditions, ecological practices, fair trade or supporting your local economy, shopping has become a moral minefield.

Online shopping should make it a lot easier to fit your consumption to your requirements, but it’s not as easy as it seems.  The open marketplace of the ‘net means a couple of things:

  1. Consumers now have to sift through mountains of crap online to find what they want.
  2. Search engines are not democratic, they’re “survival of the clickest”.

I have climbed the mountain of crap and seen the other side!  I have mad search skills.  I don’t want these lovely independent online creators and retailers to disappear, so I’m making this list so that they’ll be easier to find – for you and for me!
